During the 1960s, Summerhill initiated various committees and advisories to address the neighborhood's prevalent issues. Despite these efforts, challenges such as urban decay, unemployment, and overcrowded schools persisted, marking the neighborhood's landscape throughout the 20th century. The area experienced population decline and a shrinking geographical footprint. Notably, in the 1990s, the construction of the Centennial Olympic Stadium brought global attention to Summerhill as it hosted the 1996 Olympics' opening and closing ceremonies alongside track and field events. Subsequently transformed into Turner Field, the stadium became the Atlanta Braves' home before being acquired by Georgia State University. Insights from the Oscar Harris collection highlight that the Olympics' presence reignited interest in revitalizing the neighborhood, prompting concerted efforts by local organizations since 1996 to foster Summerhill's redevelopment.
